| A trip up US Route 40 : Baltimore to Havre
de Grace, Md. Before Interstate I-95 ( the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway ) was completed in the early 1960's , the route from Baltimore to Philly and New York was U.S. Route 40 ; Pulaski Highway. The trip would take much longer as travelers traveled through traffic lights and local traffic, and Baltimore was commonly known as the traffic bottleneck between Washington D.C. and New York City. All along the route, local businesses opened up , including diners, motels and restaurants. While many of these have closed since, some are still open today. Even among those who have closed, some of the old buildings are still there, although some have been converted to other uses. U.S. Route 40 can remind you of a time capsule going back 50 or so years with all it has to offer. However, with land prices as they are in the area these days, you'd better see these sights while you have the chance. Kilduffs Route 40 page has grown into six web pages traveling north on Pulaski Highway and the final page traveling West out of Baltimore City on Rt 40 West. A large part of these pages are old postcards I have found over the years. Current photos were taken by the webmaster, Thomas Paul . Enjoy ! Kilduffs also has a Rt 1 page of the travels of US Route One through Maryland as well. ..............................................................................

| Holiday Inn 3600 Pulaski Highway. The Holiday Inn Chain had three motels in "Baltimore City Proper" that I have found, Rt. 40, Downtown and Pimlico. See Kilduffs Baltimore Hotel page for the other two. There are several Holiday Inns outside of the Baltimore City Limits as well. The Holiday Inn on Pulaski Highway has since changed hands and is now run as a private hotel. The swimming pool pictured is no longer there, after being filled in, to enlarge the parking lot. .....................................................

| New Motel
4601 East Monument Street Baltimore Maryland. The New Motel is located about one block to the West of Pulaski Highway on East Monument Street. Somewhere around the 1980's, it was bringing in a crowd that tended to attract the attention of local police. In the 1990's, the New Motel was bought out by the Volunteers of America, who now operate the facility as a learning center. |

| Marylander Motel 6401 Pulaski Highway Baltimore City, Maryland. The Marylander Hotel has been altered and scaled down, but is still open to this day. The large vertical sign is long gone. There is no longer a swimming pool in the center of the parking lot, and parking on the street, as seen in this old postcard is no longer allowed, as traffic congestion in the afternoons can get pretty bad. ......................................................

About a mile south of the I-695 interchange, off of the southbound lanes of Pulaski Highway, this old sign still stands. It's in front of a old house, but it doesn't appear to be a rooming house anymore. |
