Corner stores were everywhere,
but as time went by, the " supermarket " was
developed where shoppers could find just about
everything under one roof.
 Below, an old A&P Store at
5543 Harford Road, now converted to other uses.

 You could find an A&P just
about anywhere in Baltimore City. Some of
the
more unusual locations were 3105 St Paul Street,
609 Gorsuch, 1407 North
Milton Aveue, and 252 N. Franklintown Road. Check

Supermarkets were also a popular food store
chain around Baltimore City. Later went by the
name of Acme/ Super Saver markets.

and Delicatessen Stores, Inc. Baltimore ,Maryland ( 1930's ) ..
 The
ad ( above ) is from the mid 1930's. I'm
not too sure how long Cohen's survived, but the
stores were on the West and Northwest side
of the City. Judging by the addresses, they were
likely smaller markets, selling under one name.
Stores could be located at 3500 Park Heights
Avenue ( now an empty lot ), 4350 Park Heights (
now a parking lot ) , 5112 Park Heights Avenue (
old commerical strip, still standing ),
2313 Reisterstown Road, ( commerical strip ) ,
926 Whitelock Street (
empty lot ), 2122 Presbury ( small store, still
standing ), 3317 Garrison Blvd ( Apartment
building ), and 1100 East Lombard ( parking lot )

In the 1930's, Food Fair had opened their first store at Greenmount and 25th Street. The store opened to quite a lot of press as people realized that the " Supermarket " was here to stay, with " discount prices " and great selection. The picture on the right shows the Food Fair in 1939, the picture below the same building in 2006. The location is no longer used as a food store.  |

Later Food Fair Stores could often be located by the large column and " Food Fair" high up in the air. This store was located on the southeast corner of York Road and Woodbourne Avenue, and has since been replaced by another food store in a newer building. |

 Wagner's Food Stores Chain was a much smaller chain, but a chain much remembered. Early Wagner Food Stores were located on Greenmount Avenue, St Paul Street and York Road, and the store interior ( seen below ) was on the southeast corner of Loch Raven and East Cold Spring Lane. The building is now used by various smaller stores, including a dollar store, a wig shop and a Chinese Food Carry Out. .............................. |
