The Parkway is one of Baltimore's gems
in the rough, a theatre of downtown movie palace
caliber well outside of downtown. And that may
have saved this beautiful old movie house from
being torn down after all these years. The Parkway
was built in the mid 1910's, in an area at the
time was the north boundary of Baltimore City.
There was no need to go any further North, as
you'd be heading into undeveloped territory, after
you passed through Charles Village and Roland
Park. The area was popular for many years,
but has seen a decline recently, and the old
theater has sat vacant for years, after closing in
the early 1980's. A Korean Business Owner's
Association took up shop in the old theater for
some time, and the bank building just to the West
of the Parkway was razed to build a McDonald's,
but so far the old theater still stands. It is
only a block from the popular Charles Theatre, and
there are active plans in the works to bringing
back the old theater, and the area as well.
