226 Virginia Avenue

Cumberland, Maryland |
.............. |
........................The 200 block of Virginia Avenue in
South Cumberland had not one, or two old theatres, but
three total over the years. They included the Lloyd,
Leader and New. The Lloyd might actually still be
standing, and appears to have been
a movie house made out of a old Tobacco warehouse.
Accross the street, the
old New Theatre stands, converted to meeting hall. I
believe the Leader Theatre,
located at 212 Virginia is the one theatre of the group
of three in that
block that has since been torn down. There is a old hall
just north of the
site of the Leader which is still standing, but I don't
think that movies
were ever shown in there. |

south end of the block. An old bank building that had
been on the other end of the block has since been torn
down. |

The Leader was one of ten
theatre names that I have found for Cumberland.
The listings I found for the theatre were listed
in the 1930's showing a seating of 300 -
400.
Other Cumberland theatres
included the Capitol, Embassy , Garden, Lloyd,
Liberty , Maryland, New, Strand, and Howard.
|
All the
remaining theatre buildings are in the 200 block of
Virginia Avenue, but insurance maps show early South
Cumberland smaller nickledoen theatres in twoother
blocks as well. The pictures below show the sites of
two other early movie houses that have
since but torn down that had been on Viginia Avenue. |
.............
..................................On Virginia Avenue, between 3rd. &
4th. Streets, a small " 5 Cent " theatre was listed in
early insurance maps at 152 Virginia Avenue ( the
numbering system has since changed ). The little
theatre, of what name we don't know ( yet ), was
located next to a tin shop, and a recent check found a
parking lot at the site now. It may have gone under
the name the Howard Theatre, but we're not quite sure. .............
...............................................................................Neat old building we found just south
from where this theatre would have been .
.............
..................The final 5 Cent theatre we found was
located in this block of Virginia Avenue, between 4th.
and 5th. Streets, noted as 173 1/2 Virginia Avenue,
this tiny theatre was next to Kline's Department Store
and down the street was a bowling alley. On the other
side of the street was the Virginia Avenue Hotel. The
entire block has been redeveloped and the
site is currently a Sheetz Gas Station lot............
