Kilduffs
is working on a page for the Belvedere theatre in
Cumberland Maryland. Stay Tuned. Also listed for
Cumberland in the middle 1910's was the Academy of
Music, which I beleve burned down. A check of the
address of 139 Baltimore Street shows a corner
building but so far we have found nothing of a movie
house there, but we are still investigating. We did find two older movie houses in
the same block area, one theatre known as the Empire
and the second only showing as the 5 Cent Theatre, an
early way that nickleodeons were represented on
insurance maps. We also found an old postcard that
shows the Empire that we hope to post soon.
We did
notice that the addresses changed over the years, and
the Belvedere might just have been the unknown 5 Cent
theatre mentioned above. The entire area is now
a foot mall closed to vehicle traffic.

On
old insurance maps from the 1910's, we have located two
old movie theatres in the area of the 100 block of
Baltimore Street. By 1920, neither of these are listed
and the buildings at that time were used for other
purposes. ..
.............................................................................................Kilduff's has located two old 1910's
movie houses in this block of Cumberland from the
1910's. The first building, greatly altered over the
years ( and may not be the orginal building on the
site ) has the triangles above the windows and was
known in the 1910's as the 5 cent theatre ( common
name in insurance maps for a nickelodoen ) and could
have been the Belvedere Theatre . A bit down the block
was the Empire Theatre, another early theatre in
Cumberland. The only other surviving older downtown
Cumberland thetre that we have found is the Embassy
Theatre, which is a block to the West.
