Charles Center
Downtown Baltimore City , Maryland

Baltimore's answer to the needs of movie goers after tearing down the Century  / Valencia and nearby Keith's Theatres. In the 1960's, as Charles Center was built, developers were aware that much of the developed area took away the Unit block of West Lexington Street, which had several movie houses along it. The answer was a small theatre called the Tower Theatre, which sat on the northwest corner of Charles Street and Saratoga Street.  It closed in the 1980's, and sat vacant for years before being remodeled to other uses. It was never very popular, as parking at the Tower meant you parked along the street ( slim chance ) or paid for parking in one of the garages. The days of people walking downtown and resting while watching a movie were over, as is evident by the closing of the Tower Theatre.  The space had been a lecturing hall for Johns Hopkins University, but a food store now occupies the site .

These photos were taken in the early 1980's.  The entrance was a bit tricky to find, and for a modern theatre, not a bad looking theatre.
