Back in the 1940's , along West North Avenue,
movie theaters marquees could be seen in nearly every block. One of the largest
marquees had to be the vertical MET marquee, which can be seen here just behind
the streetcar ( right ). The Met was located on the northeast of West
North Avenue and Penna. Avenue, and was one of the nicer movie houses in
West Baltimore. The old theatre lasted into the 1970's when it was torn down
for a "park" and subway station. One old ad I found for the Met in it's last
years was for the movie Rattlers circa
1976. The caption reads " What A Horrible Way To Die!". While that was intended
for the movie itself, the caption goes a long way in describing the Metropolitan itself and the types of movies you saw at the
before it finally closed.

The site of the
Metropolitan Theatre today. The entire block was razed in the 1970's, making
way for a senior home, a drug store and a subway station.
