   The Mayfair Theatre has been around longer than nearly any movie theatre in Baltimore. Opening back in the 1870's, the Mayfair was a gym of sorts, and later was transformed into a theatre, known as the Auditorium.  The Auditorium was right next to the Academy of Music, and around the corner was the Maryland Theatre, and in the middle of the group was the old Congress Hotel.  Known as Kernan's Corner for years, this group of theaters was the best example of a " Theater District" Baltimore would ever come to know. The Academy of Music would only survive until the 1920's, when it was torn down to make way for Baltimore's largest theater, the Stanley. ( The Stanley would later be torn down to make way for a parking lot ) . In the 1940's, the theater would be known as the Mayfair, which it was known as until it closed in the 1980's. Sadly, in the 1990's, the roof fell in after bad weather, and the building is in dire need of repairs. The last proposal was to make the building into apartments.

	The only survivor in a block that was once all theaters.    Several old theatre ads for the Auditorium/Mayfair. Seen are ' The Road to Singapore" 1940,  "The Vanquished" 1953,  "The Wife of Monte Cristo" 1946 and Union Station, 1950.
