This
small theater, currently a church , is located
several blocks north of The Johns Hopkins Hospital
on Broadway. Also going under the name of the
Plaza Theatre, and Broadway Garden , the
building is located at 1105 North Broadway ,
and operated between the 1910's and 1970's.
The building looks out of place in an
area of row houses and construction, and is only a
few blocks north of the latest Hopkins construction
project. The building apparently has also been used
as a clubhouse and might have been used as a
Republican meeting house at one time.Seating was
between 200 and 415 people.
Notes from
Thomas Foster
I
lived on North Broadway, an only child, and
the Park was my second home. There was a penny
candy store next to the Park and my mother would
give me the 10 cents admission and 2 cents for
candy. When WW II came, a tax made the admission 11
cents. Sometimes, lacking pennies, my mother would
give me 15 cents, leaving 4 cents for a bonanza of
candy!
Being a
mannerly little boy, with good behavior drummed into
me by grandparent and parents all in the 3 story
house, I remember the usher at the Park had a
pronounced limp.
Patrons called
him "Hop" because of that limp. So what did the
mannerly little man call him, not knowing his
name? Why "Mister Hop", of course.
