| Baltimore
has been an industrial city for much of it's past, and while much of the
industrial base has left, plenty of reminders can be found all over town.
Sure there is plenty of industry left in Baltimore today, and there
are still some big plants in town, but over the years, in a changing world,
many of the old factories have closed down or moved to where things can
be done cheaper. In a 1931 Industrial Plant publication for Baltimore City, listings are found of industrial plants that produced just about everything, right here in Baltimore. And while many of those old companies are long gone, many of the old factories still stand. |

The headstone above is found on a doorway of an old plant on East Biddle Street at Chester Street, in East Baltimore City. The plant occupies an entire City block and is quite a sight. Just a few blocks north of Johns Hopkins Hospital, it will be interesting to see what becomes of the old factory. |

the second was taken in 2005. The old plant still sports the giant GOETZES"S

Esskay Meat Plant Baltimore, Maryland |
Another of Baltimore's Meat plants, the Esskay complex has also closed, and I believe some, if not all of the structure has been torn down. |

| Baltimore had dairies
located all over town. Below left , the Cloverland Farms Dairy
building at 1910 Windsor Avenue. Later, the building had a giant milk bottle
added to the front. The building is currently a day care center. Below
right, the Greenspring Dairy building on 41st Street in Northern
Baltimore City. Most office the complex came down in the 1980's for a shopping
center, but I believe the designers kept a little of the front and
incorporated it into the shopping centers design. |

| Arundel Ice Cream
was one of the more popular local ice cream plants in Baltimore, with the
factory located on Smallwood Street in Southwest Baltimore City
( Seen below left ) . Arundel Ice Cream stores could be
found all over the City. Below right, the Greenmount Avenue factory for
Supreme Ice Cream. The Supreme plant was torn down years ago
and the site is part of the Maryland State Jail system building complex.

| Baltimore Bakers |
|
|
|
| Baltimore still has several active
bakeries within the City limits, but as preservatives become common in
baked goods, giving food a longer shelf life, the need for local bakeries
has declined, with items being shipped into Baltimore from all over. Pictured
above left is the City Bakery, located at Carey and Laurens in
West Baltimore. This plant is still open to this day. Above right,
the General Baking Company plant on the northwest corner of
Harford and North Avenue and long since closed down and was torn down years
ago. The site is now a pharmacy and parking lot. Seen below left
, the Meade Bakery on Aisquith Street in East Baltimore. |
