![]() Looking
East towards the Ocean from Baltimore Avenue on
Worcester, you can see the entire history of the
Capitol Theatre in one shot. The first building on
the left is a live performance theater, built from a
converted garage and is not nor was it never the
Capitol Theatre. As you wander up that side of the
street, towards the Boardwalk, you will be passing
the "Site" of the old Capitol theatre from the early
1920's. That property has long since been
redeveloped. On the opposite side of the street, you
can see the Capitol Theatre, rebuilt in the 1960's
after a fire.

The Capitol
Theatre in Ocean City was one of only a few movie
houses in town . Listed from the late 1920's into
the middle 1950's , the theatre seated 350. One
account listed the seating as 786 , likely an typo.
I believe the original Capitol Theatre burned down
in the mid-1960's, but the building was replaced,
and in later years may have gone under the name of
the Playhouse. Movies were also shown at the
Casino on the Boardwalk Pier , which later burned
down. Movies were also shown at the Showell Theatre
at Division and Baltimore Streets , operating from
around 1930 and lasting into the mid 1940's, seating
between 230 and 400. The Windsor Theatre was also
listed from 1930 to 1947.
