Several
Baltimore movie theatres were torn down to
make way for a Boulevard that would make
travel from Southwest Baltimore to the
Howard Street Coridor quicker. Martin
Luther King Blvd. has made travel in
Baltimore much easier, but the Columbia
Theatre was one of the old theatres torn
down to make way for the new roadway, as
were theatres on Penna. Ave., West
Baltimore Street , and Fremont Street. The
photo above shows the oldColumbia Theatre
before it was torn
down. The site is now a ramp to get onto
I-95 towards Washington DC or New York.

There were actually two movie
theatres in Baltimore with the name " Columbia",
named after the street, which back in the day was
known as Columbia Road. It as since been renamed
Washington Blvd. The Columbia theatre seen at the
top of the page was a much larger and well known
theatre, torn down in the 1970s' to make way
for the building of Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. The
Eureka, which was very close to the Columbia was
also torn down to make way for the thruway.
