Baltimore's Western National Bank, circa 1913. I believe the building
still stands to this day, although for other uses. ................... .......The Baltimore Commercial Bank, above right and right, were located in downtown Baltimore City. Many of Baltimore's early banks ( 1900's circa ) were located along Howard and Eutaw Street, in the general area of Lexington Street. Early banks started out as smaller businesses and would later branch out with one or two offices in other downtown locations. Below, another Baltimore Commerical Bank branch office, and below right, a drawing from an advertisement for National Bank of Baltimore. Please feel free to email Kilduffs with any questions or comments .

Before the era of plexiglas and bulletproof glass, banks would have lobbies and customer service areas that let you know your money was in a secure place. The trend for the security seems to be turning back to allowing customers a face to face transaction with tellers, although you will still find plenty of banks with all the safety features still in place. The interiors seen in these photos date back to the 1950's. |

............ Baltimore's Old Town Bank, located at Gay Street and Front Street, just east of downtown. The ad below shows an ad which Old Town merged with Drovers & Mechanics National Bank. Mergers would dictate for years how banking was done in Baltimore , and today very few of the old banking names are used in Baltimore. |

| As Baltimore grew in the 1910's,
Baltimore's banking grew and changed with it. While a good central bank
was important in the downtown area, more branch offices were beginning
to open up all over town. Other banks skipped the downtown branch all together
, opening up banks under various names all over the City, to serve the various
neighborhoods. |

Postcard viewBest known as the " Walbrook Bank" this old building may have opened under the name Chesapeake Bank . The building is in the Walbrook Junction section of Baltimore City, in the 3100 block of West North Avenue. The entire area has undergone many changes over the past 100 years, but this bank building continues to be used by a bank, as seen in the photo below. |

Paul Photo 2005Wilson Savings Bank on West Baltimore Street near Franklintown Road. Many of the older banks since converted to other used can be identified by the use of concrete or marble around the entranceway. Often , elaborate door and window trim is left in place years after the old banks have closed, with the buildings being converted to stores, churches and even homes. The photo on the right shows where the old lettering above the doorway of this bank was removed. |

| Usually when you find a business
strip in Baltimore, located near a old manufacturing hub, you'll find a
closed up bank building. This old bank building, currently being used as
a church, is located on Poplar Grove Street, about a block north of Edmondson
Avenue. Across the street, back in the day, was the Astor ( Poplar ) Theatre,
which is currently used as a food store. ................

Frederick Road and the Irvington
neighborhood have plenty of history. The old Irvington street car garage,
and the Irvington Theatre, just to name a few. This old bank closed a few
years back, but when I had to chance to peek inside a few years back,
the interior was still quite a sight to look at. I'm not sure what the
building is being used for these days. ...........

One of many old bank branch offices long since converted to other uses in Baltimore City. This building is on the corner of North Avenue and St Paul Street and is currently used as a church. The building had been used by the West Baltimore Building and Loan Assn , later known as Heritage. There were many bank branches along North Avenue, and most are still standing, although all to other uses. |

The bank building above is at the intersection of North Avenue and Maryland Avenue, and while one of many favorite old banks, I can never seem to get a good photo of the old building. |

This two story building is found on the northeast corner of North Charles Street and North Avenue. The stone details around the entrance are nice and the building seems to be in good condition. I have no idea what the building is being used for these days. |

Until recently, this old branch was still being operated by the bank, in the 3100 block of Greenmount Avenue. Hey, at least it still has a ATM attached to the front. Hmmmmmmm.
I could use some help here. I have some information on these
buildings, but need more before these go into the correct sections as banks.
Any information on these buildings, or any others on this page, or some
I missed , and I'm sure there are plenty, would be greatly appreciated !

....................Perhaps a old bank front, in the 1500 block of East North Avenue ? |
|
||
This old building can be found on Reisterstown Road, just north of Belvedere. Used for years as a animal hospital, I have a feeling, by the style of the front of the building, that it was once a bank. I'm still researching this one. |

Located on East Baltimore Street, I have been told it was once a bank, any ideas which one ? The old clock has long since been removed and the building is a store to this day, although the stained glass windows are still intact ! |

The building above, on East Madison Street , looks like it once used as a bank. Any ideas ? To the right, a old bank building currently used as a church on West North Avenue. Below, a old bank branch building , next to it's replacement building, on East Monument Street . Below right, this building has me puzzled, on East Madison Street, near Central Avenue. |
