still stands to this day above , although
for other uses, when it was incorporated into the
design for the Hippodrome Theatre complex.
................... The Baltimore Commercial Bank, above right , was
located in downtown Baltimore City. Many of
Baltimore's early banks ( 1900's circa ) were
located along Howard and Eutaw Street, in the
general area of Lexington Street. Early
banks started out as smaller businesses and would
later branch out with one or two offices in other
downtown locations.

Banks were
also found in Baltimore's business district,
with at least one survivor , the old Savings
Bank of Baltimore Building. It's no longer
a bank, but is still used as offices. You could
find branch offices of the Savings Bank of
Baltimore at 5114 Park Heights Avenue, Loch
Raven and Northern Parkway, Harundale ,
Arbutus, and Westview.

Before
the era of plexiglas and bulletproof glass,
banks would have lobbies and customer service areas
that let you know your money was in a secure place.
The trend for the security seems to be turning back
too, once again allowing customers a face to face
transaction with tellers, although you will still
find plenty of banks with all the safety features
still in place. The interiors seen in these photos
date back to the 1950's. Photos -

.....Baltimore's
Old Town Bank, located at Gay Street and Front
Street, just east of downtown. The ad above shows
an ad which Old Town merged with Drovers &
Mechanics National Bank. Mergers would dictate for
years how banking was done in Baltimore , and
today very few of the old banking names are used
in Baltimore.
It was recently converted into a hotel.

construction of Charles Center in the early
1960's. The postcard on the right shows the
bank, with it's neighbor, the Colonial Savings
Bank building ( 1904-late 1950's) , which
is also gone. Both banks were built just after
the Baltimore fire of 1904.Below, an early

......As Baltimore
grew in the 1910's, Baltimore's banking grew and
changed with it. While a good central bank was
important in the downtown area, more branch offices
were beginning to open up all over town. Other banks
skipped the downtown branch all together , opening
up banks under various names all over the City, to
serve the various neighborhoods. |

....Best known
as the " Walbrook Bank" this old building
may have opened under the name Chesapeake Bank .
The building is in the Walbrook Junction section
of Baltimore City, in the 3200 block of West
North Avenue. In the 1960's, the bank was
operated by Union Trust Bank , and as the entire
area has undergone many changes over the past
100 years, this bank building continues to
be used by a bank, as seen in the photo above.
........( Above ) There was plenty of
excitement at the old Walbrook bank in West
Baltimore, after a bank robbery, circa 1940's. A
Baltimore City Police car and motorcycle are seen
parked in front.

....Wilson Savings
Bank in the 2500 block of West Baltimore Street
near Franklintown Road. Many of the
older banks since converted to other used can be
identified by the use of concrete or marble around
the entranceway. Often , elaborate door
and window trim is left in place years after the old
banks have closed, with the buildings being
converted to stores, churches and even homes. The
photo on the top left shows where the
old lettering above the doorway of this bank was
removed. |

Usually when you
find a business strip in Baltimore, located near a
old manufacturing hub, you'll find a closed up bank
building. This old bank building, currently being
used as a church, is located on Poplar Grove Street,
about a block north of Edmondson Avenue. Across the
street, back in the day, was the Astor (
Poplar ) Theatre, which is currently used as a food
store. |
|
This West
Baltimore Street bank was once a Mercantile Bank
and later changed over and was operated by
Carrollton Bank at 1201 West Baltimore
Street . The building still looking great
and seems to be in excellent shape, currently
being used by a church.

A small Calvert Bank

used for years as a church, and if you have
really good eyes, you can still read the slogan

the doorway, as seen in the photo on the below. For a few
years, the building was also used by Fidelty
and Baltimore National Bank as a branch
office.

Frederick Road and the Irvington
neighborhood have plenty of history. The old
Irvington street car garage, and the Irvington
Theatre, just to name a few. This old bank closed a
few years back, but when I had to chance to
peek inside a few years back, the interior was still
quite a sight to look at. I'm not sure what the
building is being used for these days.

..... One of many
old bank branch offices long since converted to
other uses in Baltimore City. This building is on
the corner of North Avenue and St Paul Street and
is currently used as a church. The
building had been used by the West Baltimore
Building and Loan Assn , later known as
Heritage. There were many bank branches
along North Avenue, and most are still standing,
although all to other uses. |

The bank
building above left is at the

and while one of many favorite old banks, I can
never seem to get a good photo of the old
building.

The two story building above
right and below is found on the
northeast corner of North Charles Street and North
Avenue, and was once a Park Bank branch.
The stone details around the entrance are nice and
the building seems to be in good condition. I have
no idea what the building is being used for these
days.

the old Canton Savings Bank is being used for

an area of Baltimore City that has really been
doing well. The bank has stone coins on the side of
it and the motto " Money is Power ". At least they
were honest.

The old

Hmmmmmmm. I
could use some help here. I have some information on
these buildings, but need more before these go into
the correct sections as banks. Any information on
these buildings, or any others on this page, or some
I missed , and I'm sure there are plenty, would be
greatly appreciated ! |

This might have been an old bank,
I'm not sure the history, or why someone decided
to save the facade of this old building on West
Baltimore Street, a few blocks to the West
of downtown.
.................................. The mystery deepens, as a emailer was kind enough to send a picture of Baltimore Street around 1920 and it almost seems to have been a garage or firehouse. I'm beginning to suspect it was a garage for a coal company. |
Perhaps a old bank front, in the 1500 block of East North Avenue ? |
.....................

This one has me stumped, is it an old bank ? This 1920's style building, on the southeast corner of North Avenue and Maryland Avenue is a odd looking addition to the buildings in the block. Currently being used as a restaurant. |
.. |
........This old
building can be found on Reisterstown Road, just
north of Belvedere. Used for years as a animal
hospital, I have a feeling, by the style of the
front of the building, that it was once a bank. I'm
still researching this one. |
.
|
Located on
East Baltimore Street, I have been told it was once
a bank, any ideas which one ? The old clock has long
since been removed and the building is a store to
this day, although the stained glass windows are
still intact ! I heard from
one emailer who believes this may have been a Midstate
Savings and Loan office. |

The building above, on East
Madison Street , looks like it once used as a bank.
Any ideas ? To the above

on East Monument Street . Below

puzzled, on East Madison Street, near Central
