In a three block area of North Avenue, near Charles Street, there were four theaters at one time, including the Aurora, Peabody. Parkway, and Centre. Just down Charles Street, is the Charles Theatre. The marquee of the Aurora remained into the 1980's, and the building, which opened as a theater in the 1920's, as been used as a church since the late  1970's. Before closing the theatre went by the names 5 East and North Avenue Cinema. In 1976, you could see the X rated film " Antigone" at the North Avenue Cinema along with " Night of Lust" . Back in 1922, you could see such family fare as Tom Mix in " The Fighting Streak " The area is currently undergoing a transformation, and it could be interesting to see what happens to the old theater in all the changes.

Several views of  the Aurora Theatre. Above,  during a snowstorm in the 1940's, a look at the marquee in the 1980's, and a current shot of the building, minus the marquee, which was taken down in the 1990's. The lot next to the Aurora was once the Peabody Theatre, later Center Stage, which burned down in the 1970's.
